Local Attractions

As well as the obvious attraction of the breathtaking scenery of the Lakes and Dales there are many other attractions within easy reach. Castles to Coastal Resorts, Quaint village centres to Museums. Birdwatching to Golfing. Far too many to list everything so we have just put a few examples below

Lowther castle

Castles, Houses and Gardens

Lowther Castle has an exhibition detailing the chequered history of both the castle and family (who are still custodians) it has extensive gardens and a very good cafe. There are also many miles of walks and bike rides in the parkland surrounding the castle.

Levens Hall a very interesting house with an interesting history (details in the house itself) also boasts one of the oldest topiary gardens in the country. There is a great walk through the deer park by the river Kent and a good cafe. The family still live in the house.

Sizergh Castle (National Trust) another very interesting house and gardens with good cafe and extensive walks in the surrounding parkland

Holker Hall, Family owned house with formal and informal gardens apart from the usual tour of the house and gardens Holker hosts many events throughout the year including vintage car shows, country markets and a Christmas fair (see their website for details.)

Coastal Resorts

Morecambe : A fairly commercial resort with a long walk along the promenade with great views across the bay. An impressive feature on the sea front is the Midland Hotel a very impressive 1920’s structure.

Grange Over Sands: on the opposite side of Morecambe bay with many small local shops and a quiet walk trough the gardens on the front.

Silverdale: Seafront village with eating at local pubs ,a very good fish and chip shop and miles of sand when the tide is out.

Barrow coastal route; The coast road to Barrow has many car parks along it where you can stop and walk on the beaches and front.

Village Centres

There are many quaint and interesting village centres in the Lakes and Dales why not take the car ferry across Windermere and drive up to Hawkshead passing (or stopping at) Beatrix Potters house Hill Top or in the opposite direction to the small Dales town of Sedbergh or further on to the cobbled main street and glorious dales views of Dent. There is Orton just up the road from here with a hand made chocolate shop where you can sit in the cafe and watch the chocolates being made and then drive out of the village towards Appleby to the very different views of limestone pavement. Kendal town centre itself is well worth a visit with its many “yards” off the main street. I could go on and on……

Golf etc.

There are several golf courses within easy reach Carus Green being the nearest (between Kendal and Burneside), Kendal Fell with great views and Crook which I am told is probably the hardest course to walk in the country if your feeling fit. There are also courses at Windermere and Grange. Kendal has a leisure centre with swimming pool, Squash courses and Gym. There are 2 local equestrian centres if riding is your thing.

Museums and Attractions

Kendal has a Museum and also a gallery ( Abbot Hall) . The Lakeland Motor Museum is located at Newby Bridge and a little further on is the Lakeside and Havertwaite steam railway which links to Windermere ferries at its Lakeside station. Also in the same area is Hall Farm with traction engine and vintage farm machinery. Also at Lakeside is the Aquarium of the Lakes.

The attractions listed above are just a little of what is available locally so if there is some activity you are particularly interested in please contact us to find out what is available in the area.
